Requiem - Dolly

Description

Let's start this with Dolly. There are several reasons for her to be the first: she was the first character to appear in one of my comic pages, she's the most liked one, and she's definitely the one I have tampered with the most. So there's a lot to be said about her.

Indrid "Dolly" McMandrake is a young woman whose hobbies include making unpleasant former boyfriends into life-sized living dolls. Her distinctive goth style and smoking habit made it just natural for her to be the bitter revenge-seeker of the group, as well as a counterpart to the yet-to-be-properly-introduced Leila, the preppy and enthusiastic crossdresser-maker. And her coldness and overall bitchy nature made it possible to just ignore any sense of proportion in her retribution. In short, she was the good ol' "off with your head for stealing a nail" kind.

But then she started to evolve... the first problem was the sheer number of boyfriends Dolly would have to have in short periods of time, not to mention the odd disappearance of so many guys over the course of time. I didn't care for it at first, then some sort of retconning opened the path for a "new Dolly", which didn't really come(despite me having actually written a few stories with the character on it), and also the feeling that Dolly's disproportionate retributions weren't being answered themselves, proportionate or otherwise.

In the end, as time went by I gradually saw Dolly as a less and less likeable character. A character that worked well for the first few and maybe some awesome single pieces, but in all she was a annoying in the sense that nothing she ever done seemed to have any sort of consequence(besides, of course, for those her wrath was aimed at), and the addition of Candy(more a teaser, though, since "she" was also part of the New Dolly series) didn't make things any better. It was only a little time ago when I realized Dolly had become... a Mary-Sue. Or you could call it an Anti-Sue(or an Evil-Sue), since she clearly lacked the whimsical and sparkly features typical of the kind. The problem was clear, though: Dolly didn't work if thinks didn't go perfectly well. If she was caught, or the victim escaped, or overall things gone wrong, it'd be a mess to clean up. So she lived in a perfect world(for her).

So, while the dolls were pretty fun to design for a while and people were demanding more Dolly, I grew tired of the character since she was only "more of the same" over and over. And when she was not... being Dolly, things tended to look weird. Her brief relationship with Ralph didn't look natural enough, and her cameo into ToRL is bound to who knows what(seriously, even I'm not sure what to do of that).

With all that in mind, Dolly will be less missed by me than you. I'll have much pleasure in, maybe, reusing her good aspects, but even more pleasure in getting rid of a character who, for me, outlived her freshness.

And thus Dolly is left with her last picture, doing what she does best: smoking and being completely unphazed by her own intense deeds.
